Giant Gummy Bear ... on a Stick

This might be better suited for the Powers of X blog but its pretty sweet here too. . .

Candy lovers rejoice! The Giant Gummy Bear on a Stick represents the most delicious candy confection that man has ever produced. Hand made (with gloves on) in the US, the Giant Gummy Bear is 88 times larger than a standard gummy bear. Each Giant Gummy Bear weighs half a pound and comes on a stick for easy, mess-free snacking.

The EyeBorg Project

Take a one eyed film maker, an unemployed engineer, and a vision for something that's never been done before and you have yourself the EyeBorg Project. Rob Spence and Kosta Grammatis are trying to make history by embedding a video camera and a transmitter in a prosthetic eye. That eye is going in Robs eye socket, and will record the world from a perspective that's never been seen before.

from NASA with love.

Thanks for all the thoughtful posts lately.
In terms of the Apollo missions - granted space exploration can be a polarizing issue.  The particular relationship of the Apollo missions to the cold war and social upheaval in the late 1960's is justified in casting suspicion on their motivation if not their success but don't forget:

The rockets which launched the satellites which wirelessly bring this posting to you are all direct descendants of the space race.  Not to mention every cell phone call, email, you tube clip and as of June 12 - television show.

Apollo Evidence

Its simple really - we were there.  Whatever and cynical and egocentric reasons Rupert Murdoch (one of our greatest modern purveyors of ignorance) and the lunatic fringe come up with to deny our missions to the moon - we were there.  Conspiracy theories would not exist, and would simply be facts, if they were true.

Bompas & Parr Jelly Makers

Former architect and PR guy design jello molds using 3D modeling, plaster castings, and vacuumed polystyrene plastic. By collaborating with a chemistry professor, they made this one glow under a black light!
NY TIMES ARTICLE:http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/dining/01jelly.html

This month, they are making a "walk in cloud of breathable cocktail" in London, where visitors can, "step inside a cocktail with gin and tonic mist, giant limes, and massive straws."

Nari Ward

DIAMOND GYM
"Placed inside the Battle Ground Baptist Church, its roof lined with the watermarks left from Katrina, Ward’s muscular diamond shaped armature made from old workout machines mimics the structure of the building. Small wavy water-like lines cover the mirrors that bracket the piece, while small fliers stapled on the outside of the walls evoke the papered surfaces once visually defining the neighborhood after the hurricane. Ward draws inspiration not only from New Orleans but from the Rev. Al Sharpton’s office for the National Action Network, a repurposed gym, located just outside the artist’s studio in Harlem for which the piece is named after. An assemblage of Martin Luther King Jr. and other speeches fills the space, the gym mirrors powerfully reflecting both the weight of the disaster and the growing strength of the people."

Continuous Partial Awareness

I had to post this. The day after the critique last week, Cory Arcangel posted the outline of a lecture he gave called continuous partial awareness. Basically its him reading his 'idea list', or all of his current working ideas. Some of them are pretty hilarious. You can find the pdf and links to the audio of the lecture here.

Monomes

I've been obsessed with these things for a while now. The guys that make them call them "minimalist adaptable interfaces". Basically they are completely programmable open source devices that are able to control any program that can be run on a computer, so theres like a billion and one different things you can do with them. Seems like they're mostly used for electronic music right now, but they can be adapted for video and 2d image processing as well. Here's a simple program of conway's game of life:

conway's life from tehn on Vimeo.

here's a ridiculously complex sampling program:

pauk on pages from Pauk on Vimeo.

There's like 500 videos tagged monome on vimeo and even more on youtube, so if your interested, there's plenty of shit out there. Here's the official website.

something irrelevant(?)

"It has certainly been flame grilled but this extraordinary cow is still standing.

The poor creature was struck by lightening and left with blistering burns. You would expect it to have been cooked alive" (The Daily Mail).

post-lightning ruminant. i guess its only irrelevant if your not into what shit looks like after a lightning strike. which, i dunno, some of you probably are...i guess i am too. article here.

"But if it wasn't for its horrific wounds, you could hardly tell the animal had suffered."

The Hills Have Eyes

These portraits of women in Africa, Asia, and South America were done by the French photographer JR.  The prints were then illegally plastered to buildings, trains, buses etc... as a sort of gesture against wartime violence.  This is the website for the project.

Okay, let the show begin...
