In terms of the Apollo missions - granted space exploration can be a polarizing issue.  The particular relationship of the Apollo missions to the cold war and social upheaval in the late 1960's is justified in casting suspicion on their motivation if not their success but don't forget:

The rockets which launched the satellites which wirelessly bring this posting to you are all direct descendants of the space race.  Not to mention every cell phone call, email, you tube clip and as of June 12 - television show.
