I've been obsessed with these things for a while now. The guys that make them call them "minimalist adaptable interfaces". Basically they are completely programmable open source devices that are able to control any program that can be run on a computer, so theres like a billion and one different things you can do with them. Seems like they're mostly used for electronic music right now, but they can be adapted for video and 2d image processing as well. Here's a simple program of conway's game of life:
